Ban Ki Moon’s Sri Lankan Adviser: UN a sanctuary for War Criminals? – by Jay Tharan

In the International humanitarian law, the most serious violations are
called ‘War crimes’, because of its nature of cruelty. It is well
defined with four Geneva conventions and later protocols but
unfortunately the world leaders seems to be applying such laws when it
favours their national interests. In this order United Nations
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon , who is widely seen as a ineffective
man for the job , is now made a blunder by having alleged war
criminals within United Nations. At last in the history of United
Nations, itself has accepted the criminal so they could be protected
via diplomatic immunity.

During the last assault on Tamil Rebels during 2009 , Sri Lanka
believed to have massacred large amount of civilians , rebel army and
rebel supporters. In this assault the major Sri Lankan military
commander who was in the front end is Major General Shavendra De Silva
, who later received awards from far right Sri Lankan regime.
According to secret news leaked from Sri Lankan military said he was
part of the team who captured Isaipriya , the Tamil journalist who was
famous due to her TV shows and beauty, later found sexually assaulted
and tortured to death. Shavendra De Silva seems to have directly
involved in that crimes. He was directly got orders from Gottabaya
Rajapakse during the final war who ordered to “teach a horrible lesson
to Tamil Tigers which they will not forget in their history by any
means”.

Shavendra De Silva has been involved in many murders of Tamil Tiger
leaders including “white flag” case where he has ordered to shoot all
the surrendered Tamil Tiger soldiers and leaders. Also recently wife
of Tamil Tiger commander Ramesh filed a case in New York asking for
compensation from Shavendra De Silva for murdering her husband. The
case has been dropped due to Diplomatic immunity given to Shavendra De
Silva , as he was appointed as adviser. Apart from this Sri Lankan
commander seems to have taken major role is assault on Tamil civilians
in large scale which believed to have taken nearly 40,000 lives.

Now the question raised why Ban Ki Moon took him on board with many
allegations?.  Is Ban Ki Moon is threatened with any deals he had with
Sri Lanka for hiding War crimes. A Tamil website claims that he was
given with Ceylon Gems during his visit to Sri Lanka and he is now
trapped as Shavendra De Silva and Sri Lankan regime has threatened the
UN secretary him. Still strong evidence found for the case behind such
controversial appointment.

While world leaders are raising their concerns about Syria and Libya,
it is completely unacceptable for a United Nations like organisation
take alleged war criminal to be appointed as adviser to secretary. At
last a war criminal has landed in the job of advising the UN secretary
about war crimes. Since it is Sri Lanka , who has no economical
benefit for other countries they will not be concerned with this
appointment.  But such appointment has clearly showed once again Ban
Ki Moon has damaged the history of United Nations and his image.  Ban
Ki Moon should have avoided alleged war criminal as he himself said
the Sri Lankan assault as “Blood Bath” in 2009.

The secretary who should have listen to his war criminal investigation
panel who concluded the report , stating Sri Lanka and Tamil Tigers
have committed a gross violence against humanity. As per report it is
likely that war crimes have been committed in 2009 and urged for
independent inquiry. If a true independent inquiry on Sri Lankan
crimes it is Shavendra De Silva who  comes first as he participated in
the massacre by himself.

Sri Lanka’s war on Tamils already taken more than 300,000 lives in
last 62 years as British Rulers left the country. During first four
months of 2009 , nearly 40,000 lives have taken to announce a victory
of Sri Lanka by defeating Tamils. Many Human Rights organisations and
world wide Tamil organisations fight for their justice and Sri Lankan
regime to be tested against war crimes.
